Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop

This book is an absolute delight—everything I have ever dreamed of: a bookshop, books, coffee, and a sense of community.

It is a treat for the imagination, offering an escape from our fast-paced world, where success is often measured by how busy and productive we are. Before we know it, we start measuring ourselves by the same rigid standards. But in this book’s world, there is a cozy bookshop where people slow down, savor their coffee, and simply relax. It’s a space that fosters a sense of belonging and connectedness.

Each character is unique, with an interesting perspective, and there is something to learn from all of them. Somehow, they all feel relatable. Yeongyu, in particular, is truly inspiring—the way she pulls herself together and starts building the bookshop is admirable. She is deeply thoughtful about everything she does, always considering her customers and coming up with creative ways to keep the shop running. Her ideas feel organic, yet reading about them makes you feel like you are on the journey with her. That was an absolute delight for me.

This book makes you pause and reflect on your own definition of success. Do we need to meet society’s expectations, or can we carve out our own space? The author beautifully expresses this idea:

“Everyone in the novel is taking small steps forward—whether it’s learning something new or making a change in their lives. What they are doing may be far from what society considers success, but they are growing and evolving through their consistent efforts, moving beyond where they once stood. How others judge them—whether high or low, good or bad—doesn’t matter. The fact that they have progressed and are happy where they are is enough. The yardstick that measures one’s life lies within oneself, and that is good enough.”

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It felt like stepping into the life of my dreams—surrounded by books and coffee. It rekindled my love for both, making me fall for them all over again, even more deeply.
